When recording Armchair Theatre, the PRiDE called on old sidekick, Jonny Deadpan, for input on a couple of tracks. It’d been a while since they’d recorded together, and the PRiDE enjoyed the sessions so much, they decided that the next PRiDE project would be a PRiDE+1 project.
Things got underway late 2011. As ever, the PRiDE were looking for a slightly different approach to the writing and recording process, and soon came up with a method which would be applied to all the tracks. This went as follows.
The PRiDE would map out song structures, then improvise rhythm parts, usually drums, bass, organ and rhythm guitar. Basic tracks were then bounced and the recordings given to the Deadpan, along with titles and subtitles, which had been thought up during recording. These titles and subtitles would refer to all sorts of things, from characters in Batman and Looneytoons, through World of Sport wrestling, to events in the news.
Once he had the basic recordings, the Deadpan set about writing lyrics. As with the titles and subtitles, these would refer to all sorts of things, from Frank Sinatra, through John Le Mesurier and Hattie Jacques, to the story of the tortoise and the hare. There was only one remit from the PRiDE relating to the lyrics: they ought to have as little to do with the titles as possible.
The reason for this approach was to give tracks the possibility of multiple meanings and interpretations, which would give the project as a whole an underlying feel of double entendre. In other words, innuendo would be rife. And this would be the title of the project: innuendo.
While the Deadpan scratched his noggin over lyrics, the PRiDE were in the Bunker adding to the rhythm tracks: solos, vibes, synths, brass, strings. But not too much. The tracks had to breathe, rather than be saturated with a density of different sounds.
Once full backing tracks had been laid down, and the lyrics written, time was booked in the Bunker for recording vocals. Most of these were done by the Deadpan, though the PRiDE did chip in on backing vox when needed.
How successful the PRiDE+1 have been in achieving the aims of this project, is ultimately a decision for the listener to make. The Bollockbrains, however, are of the opinion that they haven’t done too bad a job at all.
